Making the G-8 Presidency Environmentally Sustainable

Minimising the environmental impact of presidency activity and offsetting carbon emissions are important priorities for the UK’s G8 Presidency, whose key themes are Africa and climate change, Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett and Foreign Office Minister Ian Pearson announced. An Africa-based project will benefit from the offsetting of carbon dioxide emissions associated with the G8 Presidency. It will also ensure the G8 Summit and other events during the UK’s G8 Presidency are environmentally sustainable. Carbon dioxide – the major greenhouse gas – is to be offset from all of this year’s G8-associated meetings, including the G8 Summit, official G8 conferences, and associated meetings. The offsetting also covers the emissions generated through air travel, local transport and accommodation at meetings. Assessments have shown that the total carbon dioxide emissions associated with the G8 Presidency will amount to 4,000tCO2, which is roughly equivalent to the emissions generated by the electricity and gas used in 800 average homes over a year. The total cost of offsetting all of the G8 events will be around £50,000, which the Government will invest in small-scale Clean Development Mechanism projects, with strong sustainable development benefits located in Africa.

What Is Environmmetal Management?

An Office of the Department of Energy that was created in 1989 to oversee the Department’s waste management and environmental cleanup efforts. An environmental management standard or system or protocol attempts to reduce environmental impact as measured by some objective criteria. The ISO 14000 standard is the most widely used standard for environmental risk management. Oil Spill Containment

How do Oil Spills Happen?
When we hear about an oil spill that has occurred in some part of the world we may be unaware of just how much oil has been spilled into either the water or on land. When we are talking about an oil spill, we are talking about a huge amount of oil that can do serious damage to the environment in which it was spilled.
How do Oil Spills happen?
Oil spills into rivers; bays and oceans are caused by accidents that usually involve tankers, barges, or refineries. Usually the oil is being transported to another part of the world for various reasons. People who by some form or another make mistakes or are being careless in what they are doing cause the spills themselves. Oil spills are not always caused by human mistake however; sometime machinery can break down which cause oil to spill out into the surrounding environment.
What happens when oil spills occur?

Behavioural Safety.

The step change required to eradicate unsafe acts is through a behavioural change.
Effective systems are important, but how people perform or behave really makes the difference.
For uptimum safety performance at work, customization and application of strategies and tools in behavior-based safety and people-based safety or organizations of all kinds should be adopted.
Realize that safety culture improvement is by good design, implemention, and sustaining appropriate people-based processes to reduce workplace injuries and incidents as they strive to achieve a Total Safety Culture™.
Beginning with a safety culture assessment , you can achieve a safety culture transformation by increasing safety leadership, employee engagement, and personal responsibility for safety.

Health Safety in the Waste Management/Recycling Industry

Health and safety in the waste management and recycling industries
These pages explain what HSE is doing to tackle key issues as well as providing access to a range of information about health and safety for the waste management and recycling industries.
Defra indicates that the UK produces some 400 million tonnes of waste each year. A quarter of this is from households, commerce and industry. The remainder is made up of construction and demolition wastes, mining and agricultural wastes, sewage sludge and dredged spoils.
Municipal waste has been increasing at nearly 4% per annum: at this rate of increase, it will have doubled from the 1995 level by 2020.
Most waste currently ends up in landfill sites, but around 35% of industrial and commercial waste and 12% of household waste is recycled or composted. Under the EU Landfill Directive, the next 20 years should see a dramatic decrease in the amount of biodegradable municipal waste sent to landfill.
Research for the HSE 'Mapping health and safety standards in the UK waste industry' indicates that there are currently around 162,500 people employed in the Waste Management industry. Many more are employed in other activities associated with specific recyclables and ancillary activities such as transportation.
Waste Management Activities include a multitude of activities, including:
Collection
Reception (e.g. Civic Amenity Sites)
Sorting
Recovery of materials
Biological treatment of organic materials (e.g. composting)
Thermal treatment (including incineration with energy recovery
Landfill

Environmental Protection
Environmental Protection seeks to safeguard the quality of the environment through effective regulation of activities that have the potential to impact on air, water and land. This involves engagement with businesses and the public to provide information and advice; monitoring, recording, reporting and setting standards for compliance; issuing consents, licences and authorisations and enforcing legislation. There are five distinct functional units dealing with strategy and cross-cutting issues, water quality, land and resource management (which includes waste and contaminated land), industrial pollution and drinking water for public and private supplies. Please select one of our units from the menu on the left to find out more. Air quality and climate change are managed through the Department of the Environment’s Environmental Policy Division. Enforcement is based on fair but firm regulation. View details of our Enforcement and Prosecution Policy ( pdf 92.6 KB )
